Walking - the eagle spreads its wings

The course of the Eagle Walk that wind its way through Tirol symbolizes an eagle that spreads its ‘wings’ over the country. The course starts in St. Johann in Tirol and leads via the Karwendel Mountains to St. Anton am Arlberg and into the Lechtal. The eagle is the king of birds who flies higher than the rest. It soars high in the sky, far above the landscape below. The distance from everyday life, this feeling of freedom is what hikers experience in the Tirolean Mountains. This is why the Eagle was chosen as symbol and namesake for this great hiking route through Tirol.

Kitzbühel Alps

Tirol’s glorious mountain scenery wouldn‘t be complete without the gently rolling, grass-covered Kitzbühel Alps. Fortunately, the Eagle Walk has eight segments in this scenic area. The lovely scenery of rolling foothills, countless lakes, alpine pasture huts, and rich meadows is unsurpassed. Along the way the Eagle Walk passes over tussock ridges and crests, atop gentle mountains, from one idyllic valley to the next, and has direct access to the main route.

H4 - To Imperial Destinations

An easy walk just following the water, downhill through the gentle valley, inviting you to enjoy yourselves. Please don’t forget your camera. As the typical alm countryside with old traditional farmhouses, or cascading waterfalls on the both the Kaiser and the Tiefenbach Ravines certainly are picture book impressions.

There is a path leading downhill from the Buchacker Alpine guesthouse. Follow the “Kaiserhaus” signs through the dense forests of the Hasatal valley. Then follow the Ellbach Stream and reach the Kaiser Ravine shortly before the end. Chopped timber was drifted in the rushing waters until 1950. For centuries this was the main work and livelihood of the people living in the Brandenberger valley. Now kayaks can be found, where two centuries ago woodcutters and log drivers carried out their well paid but dangerous work– but only the very experienced in this type of sport - fight their way through the cataracts. The stone path made at that time alongside the ravine, now permits spectacular impressions and insights. The steps of the Kaiser (Emperor) ravine are easy to wander through, however it means here young children have to be led by hand.

The Kaiserhaus guest house near to the fascinating Kaiser Ravine invites you to take a rest. It was built an amazing 500 years ago and got its name after Kaiser (Emperor) Franz Joseph I, visited the spectacular wood drift.

H5 - Conquering high altitudes to the Ice Caves

The way leading from the valley floor of the slow flowing Inn up to the Inn Mountains requires a high fitness level. Enjoy the walk along the ridge and saddle to reach your goal. This area is not very well known amongst mountain climbers; therefore it is very tranquil and romantic.

The start begins at the Unterlangkampfen village church. Slowly walk along the path leading up though the dense forests. A narrow path winds upwards through the forest with many serpentines. One reaches heights quickly. Just before the Höhlensteinhaus you will reach the edge of the Alpenstock and this leads upwards to a beautiful high plateau. The grandiose view back is a worthwhile reward. Beautiful views of the Inn Valley, east and the west, as well as the Hohen Tauern with the Großvenediger, the Ziller Valley and Tuxer Alps.
The vegetation of the alm pastures enchants on every visit. Those here in June can enjoy blue meadows, amongst thousands of Gentians. The Höhlensteinhaus can be found in a small hollow.

Relatively close by is the “Back” of the Kögelhörndl, a safe and secure path over the crest at a height of 1,646 m. Opening up once again a fantastic alpine panorama. Passing over high alms up to alpine guesthouse Buchacker. After a rest it is worth it to go a few metres further down, to the Ice Cave carrying the same name, the only one of its kind in the Tirol. Visits can only be made with a guide – and it is a good idea to wear a hat and warm clothing.

K5 - A visit to Alm experts

This is a very special but arduous walk leading from the Steinberghaus over Lodron down to the Kelchsau.
It is special because, of apart from the idyllic and luscious countryside of the Western part of the Kitzbüheler Alps, a visit to the Unteren Lärchenbergalm (Lower Lärchenbergalm) farmers, alpine herdsman and author Sepp Kahn, who’s “Alm Diary” gives a look at life and work in the mountains. After the Gasthof (Guesthouse) Steinberg one has to walk through forests, later through open terrain passing the Untere Lärchenbergalm and the Oberkaralm to Lodron, the highest point of the walk. After a rest at the mountain top, take the way down in a North-westerly direction over the upper (Obere) and the lower (Untere) Lodron Alm and the Demmelshütte hut to the quaint village of the Kelchsau which has many beautiful old traditional farmhouses to look at.

K6 Route - On the burning mountain

There is a lot to see on the “Adlerweg” (Eagles Path) leading from the Kelchsau over the Feldalphorn down to Auffach in the Wildschönau: The views from the Feldalphorn stretch as far as the Hohen Tauern, the Zillertaler Alps, to the Karwendel and Rofan mountains, the Baverian foothills and the Wilden Kaiser (Wild Emperor) mountain range.
In early summer one can admire the colourful Alpine Roses. The walk leads from the
Kelchsau over the Höhenbrandalm or one may of course take the chairlift. From the Alm the walk then goes uphill over the ski run, after a while one reaches the forest road to the Trockenbachalm. From here it is then up to the mountain top of the Feldalphorn. Then follow in a north westerly direction route number 2 to the “Horlerstiege”, but turn left and down to the to the Kogler Alm and Auffach before the Turmkogel. Please remember that the chair lift only operates on Saturdays and Sundays!
