Pilgrimage church Mariastein in Tyrol
About 15 km in north-western direction of the Hohe Salve and at 575 m above sea level there is one of the country’s most well-known places of pilgrimage: Mariastein.
The church (built in 1360) is impressively situated on a 14 m high rock and has been a popular destination for pilgrims since the Late Middle Ages. The 42 m high tower can be reached by 150 steps. The pilgrimage church Mariastein is absolutely worth-seeing. Apart from the items on display in the castle museum the following can be admired: the coffered ceiling in the prince’s hall, sacred objects made of gold and silver, pilgrimage plates, musical instruments and 2 very special “jewels”: a wonderful display of the Tyrolean Land Insignia with the Archduke’s hat and sceptre given by Archduke Maximilian, Master of the Teutonic Order (around 1600 AD).
