Hundalm ice & dripstone cave, ice-cold experience in the summer

A fascinating natural spectacle for young and old expects you – 45 m below the surface. The only ice cave in Northern Tyrol has been protected since 1956.

The Hundalm Ice & Dripstone Cave situated above Angerberg/Mariastein is the only publicly accessible ice & dripstone cave in Western Austria. It is open from May to September. A visit is particularly advisable in the spring, when the cave displays the most bizarre ice forms.

Its ice and stone formations provide a fascinating insight into the secrets of the origin and development of our earth. This history is told during a tour guided by members of the cave exploration club in an exciting manner that includes considerable background knowledge. Participants are equipped with mining lamps and helmets before the tour goes underground.

The tour leads via well-secured stairs through a narrow gorge down into the mountain. Even after a few metres the first ice surfaces are visible – almost under the open sky! Then the well-developed steps lead further down into the branched cave labyrinth. There is always enough time to look at the abstract forms comprised of ice and stone from up close. The really large and spectacular ice and rock formations are concealed deep inside the mountain.
